Kellen at Six Months

IMG_4434IMG_4438IMG_4560IMG_4564AIMG_4721IMG_4704IMG_4784IMG_4910DSC00647IMG_4865IMG_4743IMG_4744IMG_4763IMG_4291IMG_4293IMG_4330IMG_4364DSC00461IMG_4277IMG_4235IMG_4161IMG_4165IMG_4168
I am so very behind on documenting what’s been going on in our lives. I left pretty quickly to go out of town to help my family and was gone for several weeks. We’ve had lots of big and stressful things going on. But we did have some good adventures too, and the boys are always doing cute and funny things so I want to record some of what we’ve been up to.

What better place to start than… Kellen is HALF A YEAR OLD! … WHAT!

At six months old Kellen is:

Eating- More and more solids all the time. We are introducing new foods very slowly because his birth family has a history of food allergies and we want to be careful about watching for that. But so far he likes absolutely everything we give him. The only thing he is picky about is the temperature about his food. He likes his food to be as close as possible to room temperature. His favorite foods seem to be bananas and apples so far. But it is almost hard to say because he really does gobble down anything we put on a spoon. He still can down a bottle in no time flat, if he’s not being distracted by Brother that is. But if Mason’s in the room, we have a hard time getting Kellen to focus on the task at hand.

Playing- With his fingers and toes. One of my favorite stages is when babies discover their toes. It is so darn cute to see him stuff his feet in his mouth, or play with his toes like they’re just the most amazing invention. But he does have this little problem that sometimes he bites his toes too hard, occasionally hard enough to make him cry.

Rolling- All over the house. He can seriously get around and can navigate pretty well by steamrolling along. He is able to roll from one end of the room to the other, usually in hot pursuit of a toy. He is fond of rolling off the carpet onto the hardwood floors, only to have me re-locate him back to the softer surface. He enjoys rolling all around his crib and is in a different position every time I go check on him. He especially seems to like sleeping on his tummy.

Standing- With us supporting him of course. He has strong little legs and prefers to be standing to sitting most of the time. He loves his johnny jump and thinks he is so darn cool to be upright like a big boy. He likes to walk himself over to grab the doorjamb and spends a lot of time trying to reach far enough to chew on it. He has yet to succeed on that one. He doesn’t do tons of jumping so much as walking in there. He likes to spin in circles and reach for people that happen to be walking past (and he is delighted as can be if he happens to grasp someone’s pant leg or hem and he gets pulled along until he lets go and goes swinging backwards).

Sitting- … Well, he’s still not able to sit up on his own yet. He’s getting closer though. I think a lot of it has to do with he likes to be MOVING and isn’t motivated to stay in one position, like the act of sitting would require.

Singing- Himself to sleep every night. I swear the times he is the most vocal are when I lay him down for naptime or bedtime. He talks and sings and is happy as a calm in there until he drifts off. I don’t know why he talks the most when he’s alone, but I love hearing his little voice talking up a storm.

Saying- Dada! Right now it’s more of a noise than a word, but it is darling to hear him say nonetheless.

Growing- Up and up and up. He’s already wearing mostly 9 month clothing and a lot of it is none too huge. He still has tiny feet though. He’s outgrown his swaddles, so we FINALLY convinced him that it’s ok to just be swaddled under the armpits. Even though he’s okay with having his arms loose, he still needs to be at least halfway wrapped up. Or be wearing one of those blanket sleeper sacks.

Loving- Slapping his pot belly when he’s really happy. Bathtime. Toys. Mason. Being outside. Swinging. When we make stuffed animals “eat” his tummy. His Johnny Jump. Wiggling.

Book Review: The Two Minute Marriage Project

2min

I have a LOT of books about marriage. In fact, when I was a college student my roommates would tease me a little bit about how many books on marriage were in my possession. My collection took up one whole shelf of our Ikea bookcase. The thing is, my Mom is a Marriage and Family Therapist, so she’s sent me oodles of books on relationships over the years. And I was studying Marriage, Family, and Human Development so several of those books were for my courses. In any case, the pile just kept getting bigger and bigger and I still have most of those books today.

But it wasn’t until I picked up The Two Minute Marriage Project that I realized it’s actually been a while since I’ve read that type of book. And I was so glad that I read it because it contained so many good reminders.

I guess perhaps one of the few good things about infertility was that it really strengthened our marriage. Spencer and I grew closer facing hard things together. And though we had to wait a long time for children, we were grateful to have each other and we tried to just enjoy that phase of life. Now that we have our babies, we are loving being a family of four. But we are also realizing that spending time with just the two of us isn’t as effortless as it once was… obviously! The Two Minute Marriage Project reminded me of a few things I can do to make our marriage more of a priority. And like the title implies, these are simple, little, everyday changes that can strengthen a marital relationship.

These suggestions for strengthening relationships are backed by research and studies which, for me, makes a book a much more worthwhile read. There are plenty of “self help” books out there that are mostly opinion and not backed by evidence. Not the case with this book. Poelman did her homework. Though the book is based on research, it’s not a dry read because it is mixed with personal experiences making it both applicable and interesting.

Oh What Do You Do In The Summertime? July Edition

DSC00320A
July was a busy month. A good chunk of our time was spent at the local pool for Mason’s swimming lessons. I think I kind of mentioned this in a previous post, but we had such a good experience with swim lessons. Mason’s teacher was awesome and I really liked the way the class was set up. They did a lot of teaching through songs and games and Mason was really excited to try everything. He learned a lot!

We let Kellen dip his toes a time or two and he was pretty content. He liked splashing around and kicking those pudgy legs.

There is just nothing cuter than a toddler walking around in a Mickey towel like a little Jedi. Bah! Spencer and I about died watching him carefully lift his towel as he glided along the sidewalk.

Masons favorite part of each lesson was when he would get to jump into the pool. And his last day of class he got to go down the big waterslide with his teacher. I spent half of our time at that pool trying to keep him away from that slide so, needless to say, he was pretty excited to FINALLY be able to go down! He was beaming when they shot out into the water.

Kellen mostly sipped formula coladas poolside.

We spent lots of time at parks and splash pads. We still haven’t run out of new playgrounds to try. We have to spend time outside pretty much every day. The boys are so much happier and better behaved if they get a chance to go play and get their wiggles out. Not to mention, they nap a lot better! Our whole day goes so much smoother when they have a chance to run amuck for a while.

This is one of my favorite pictures of me and the boys:

We’re off on an adventure!

We still enjoy the occasional half-price shake or shaved ice or otter pop. Cool treats taste SO good on hot days.

We took Kellen on his first trip to the zoo!

He looks thrilled doesn’t he? He really did have an enjoyable time. Surprisingly, both boys seemed pretty excited by the butterfly exhibit. I was surprised that that seemed to be a favorite.

Kellen doesn’t care so much where we’re going, he just likes to be out and about. He LOVES being outdoors. He is happy as a clam when he can spend a bit of time in the sunshine.

There was our usual splashing in the backyard and dashing through the sprinklers. Mason thinks it is HILARIOUS to “get me” with the garden hose. DSC00459
We finished our summer reading program and collected our prizes.

I think our favorite part of July was visiting family and birth families!

As usual, I think that I have so many pictures I should break this into several posts, but I’m having enough of a hard time keeping the blog updated as it is! Suffice it to say, July was great. Lots to look forward to this month too!
